Choosing between them
A countdown to a date does something a diary entry cannot: it turns an abstract deadline into a number that changes while you watch it. That is useful for planning and occasionally uncomfortable, which is rather the point with an exam. Each of these reads your own device clock, so the figure is right in any time zone, and the fixed dates roll forward to next year automatically once they pass.
Start with the 15 minute timer
If you are not sure which length you need, the 15 minute timer is the one most people reach for. It is short enough to start without thinking about it and long enough to finish something.
