Time Conversions and Answers

Fast answers to the small time questions: seconds, hours, milliseconds and what the clock will say in a quarter of an hour.

Fifteen minutes is 900 seconds, 0.25 hours and 900,000 milliseconds. The pages below show the working, plus the neighbouring values you are likely to want next.

Choosing between them

The conversions worth committing to memory are the quarter-hours, because they are what timesheets and billing run on: 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, 30 is 0.5, 45 is 0.75. In seconds the pattern is just as simple, since every minute is 60: a quarter of an hour is 900 seconds and a full hour is 3,600. In code, work in milliseconds and write the arithmetic out rather than the literal, so 15 minutes is 15 * 60 * 1000 instead of 900000.

Start with the 15 minute timer

If you are not sure which length you need, the 15 minute timer is the one most people reach for. It is short enough to start without thinking about it and long enough to finish something.
